When we think about family outings, it’s easy to focus on the big attractions. However, some of the most meaningful experiences happen in quieter places, tucked down a country road and fostered by local stewards who pour their hearts into their community.

Our recent visit to Haven Hills Animal Sanctuary in Bealeton, VA is a reminder of why small farms are so important. They provide hands-on education, foster compassion and create a welcoming space for all.

I often find myself wanting to give my children the kind of analog childhood I experienced in the ’90s-filled with muddy shoes, scraped knees, and long afternoons spent outdoors.

The sanctuary was founded with the mission of community involvement and inclusivity, all the while providing a safe harbor for rescued farm animals.

As we explored the farm and cared for the animals I was reminded of the importance of community. It is so much more than purchasing a ticket, it’s about investing in the people and places that make our hometowns unique.

In a world that feels rushed and too often disconnected, a small family-owned farm is an invitation to slow down. Farm life isn’t glamorous, but honestly neither is life. Yet both are filled with joy, connection, and hard work; THAT is worth savoring.
